There are five new teachers at Bow High School, so I took the liberty to ask the teachers some questions to get to know them better.
The new teachers this year are Sean Doherty, Kelsey Mumford, Lianna Thomas, Sean Carroll, and Jillian Armstrong. Sean Doherty is the new B.E.S.T. teacher. He has subbed at BHS in the past. Kelsey Mumford is new in the BHS Library, located in the Learning Lab. Lianna Thomas is a new Math teacher. Sean Carroll is the new engineering teacher. Jillian Armstrong is a new English teacher and also teaches World Studies.
I asked Ms. Thomas what she enjoys doing on her free time. She responded saying that she enjoys spending time with her family outdoors. She has three kids that love to be outside. As a family they enjoy boating on the lake, traveling, baking and reading. She told me that she has a large extended family and they do many activities together as well. Her family has a family dinner every Saturday night at her grandparents' house, where there can be anywhere from 20-50 people. She said that a few weeks ago they made apple cider with an old wooden press, and they hiked together. They also will go to fairs and celebrate a lot of birthdays. Overall she enjoys doing activities with her family. The next question that I asked her was what her favorite job was other than working at BHS. To this she responded with a time when she was a student athletic trainer in a high school; it was an unpaid job. She had always been active in sports, but tore her ACL her sophomore year skiing. After that incident she took anatomy class and a first aid class, so that she was able to travel with the sports team as their trainer. She learned how to tape knuckles, wrists, fingers, and do basic first aid for injuries. She told me that she had always loved playing sports and watching sports, so her becoming an athletic trainer allowed her to still be active in sports without playing. The next question that I asked her was what her favorite time of year is. She responded with summer as her favorite season. One of the important reasons is that she can spend more time with her kids outside and that she loves being on the water. Her father has a boat on Squam Lake, so they are on the boat almost every weekend. She said that she also enjoys having a small garden and picking fresh blueberries and strawberries. The last question that she was asked was what her spirit animal is. She responded by saying that her spirit animal is a bear, because her friends and husband refer to her as a "Momma Bear", because she looks out for loved ones, she is sensitive, social, playful, focuses a lot of her time on her family and has protective instincts.
I asked Mr. Carroll what he enjoys doing in his free time and answered that he enjoys cooking, playing outside in nature, and all things sports. His favorite job other than working at BHS is being the pitching coach at Colby-Sawyer College, which he says is a lot of fun. Mr. Carroll's favorite time of year is summer is because there are more activities that he enjoys participating in. The octopus is his favorite spirit animal, due to the fact that he thinks they are pretty cool little animals that are mostly solitary, adept at hiding and adapting, and they are supposed to be fairly clever, especially when compared to most invertebrates.
Next I asked Mr. Doherty what he enjoys doing on his free time, with which he responded that he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, and trying to stay active. He loves skiing during the winter and watching Red Sox and Celtics games. His favorite job other than BHS is teaching skiing at Pat's Peak, especially teaching freestyle lessons. He says it's an awesome job, because he gets paid to ski! Next I asked him what his favorite time of the year is, and he said he loves the winter because it's the ski season but he also loves summer and going to the beach! That's why he likes New England, because we get to experience all four seasons. The last question that I asked him was what his spirit animal is, and he responded by saying, "Ben Forbes.
Ms. Armstrong said that she enjoys snowboarding most, but she also hikes, runs, rock climbs, and surfs. Traveling is something that she holds very dear to her heart. She spent a year working and traveling in Japan. Her favorite job other than here at BHS is her job at Arnie's Place in Concord during the school year and in the summer. Her favorite season is winter, because she can go snowboarding and loves its beauty. She also enjoys autumn, due to the turning of the leaves. The black bear is her spirit animal.
Ms. Mumford said that on her free time she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, being active and outside, and reading! Her favorite job other than here at BHS was at a rock climbing gym during high school. She said that she also enjoys coaching. Her favorite time of the year is fall because of the foliage and because of the food at Thanksgiving. The sloth is her spirit animal.
It's never easy to be "the new person" in a place with so many talented teachers and staff who already know each other and have connections with the students they teach. These new teachers have worked hard to become part of the BHS community, and have become valuable, appreciated and well-liked additions already! Welcome and thank you to all of them!
